How we write our practice questions
Every HighwayQuiz question is written in our own words from an official source, names the section it comes from, and has to pass automated checks before it is published. Here is exactly how.
The sources
Permit questions come from each state’s official driver handbook. CDL questions come from the commercial driver handbook and the federal rules for commercial drivers (49 CFR). Road-sign questions follow the federal sign manual (MUTCD). Where a handbook is older than a federal rule, the federal rule wins. See every source.
The numbers today
- 695 CDL questions across eight knowledge tests.
- 224 of them also cite the federal rule behind the answer, with a link to it.
- 104 pictures and sounds: signs and diagrams we draw, sounds generated in your browser, and 29 photos and placards from Wikimedia Commons, each credited.
How a question is checked
- It is drafted from the source text, one fact at a time, in plain words.
- A separate AI review pass reads only the source and the question and must reach the same answer. Disagreements are fixed or the question is dropped.
- A final review re-checks a sample of the finished questions against the source.
- Automated checks must pass before anything is published: the cited section must exist, no seven-word run may match the handbook text, there must be four distinct answers and no “all of the above”, the right answer may not be the longest one too often, and near-duplicate questions are rejected.
What we never do
- Copy questions, pictures or explanations from the DMV test or from other practice sites.
- Show made-up numbers, reviews or countdown timers.
- Claim a state’s test format before we have checked it against that state’s official site.
Keeping it current
Handbooks and rules change. We re-check questions against each new handbook edition and federal rule change. Not affiliated with any state DMV or the FMCSA.
