To get a CDL, choose your class (A, B or C), meet the age, English and medical requirements, pass the general knowledge test to receive a commercial learner's permit, finish entry-level driver training if required, wait at least 14 days, then pass the three-part skills test in a vehicle of your class.
Federal rules set the same basic path in every state. The order below follows 49 CFR Part 383, with Part 380 for training and Part 391 for age, language and medical rules. Your state runs the tests and sets fees.
No one may operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) without a CDL issued by the state where they live, unless an exception applies. The class depends on weight rating, not on how heavy the load is on a given day. 49 CFR 383.23
| Class | Vehicle | Weight rule |
|---|---|---|
| A (combination) | Any combination of vehicles | Combined rating of 26,001 lb (11,794 kg) or more, with the towed unit rated over 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) |
| B (heavy straight) | A single vehicle, or one towing a light trailer | Rating of 26,001 lb (11,794 kg) or more; any trailer towed is 10,000 lb or less |
| C (small) | Any vehicle or combination that is neither A nor B | Designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver, or used to carry hazardous materials that require placards |
A higher class covers the lower ones once you hold the right endorsements. A Class A driver who has passed both test sets may drive Class B and C vehicles, and a Class B driver may drive Class C. Moving to a higher class means taking the related tests again. 49 CFR 383.91
A CLP lets you practice on public roads. It is a separate document from your CDL, and getting one is a precondition for the first CDL and for any upgrade that needs a skills test. 49 CFR 383.25
Since February 7, 2022, an entry-level driver must finish training from a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry before the relevant test. The training has a theory part and behind-the-wheel part, with range and public-road time. 49 CFR 380.60949 CFR 380.605
Every applicant is tested on 20 general areas, from safe operation rules and vehicle controls to shifting, backing, speed and space management, emergency maneuvers, skids, cargo, inspections, mountain driving and fatigue. 49 CFR 383.111
The skills test must be taken and passed in a fixed order, and you cannot go on to the next part after failing one. Scores for passed parts last only for the initial permit; if the permit is renewed, you retake all three. 49 CFR 383.133
Your CDL carries the restrictions that match the vehicle you tested in, so the choice of test truck matters. 49 CFR 383.95
| Code | Restriction | Cause |
|---|---|---|
| L | No air brake equipped CMV | Failed the air brake knowledge test, or tested in a vehicle with no air brakes |
| Z | No full air brake equipped CMV | Tested in a vehicle with air over hydraulic brakes |
| E | No manual transmission | Tested in a vehicle with an automatic transmission |
| O | No tractor-trailer | Tested in a Class A combination connected by a pintle hook or other non-fifth-wheel hitch |
| M | No Class A passenger vehicle | P endorsement test taken in a Class B passenger vehicle |
| N | No Class A or B passenger vehicle | P endorsement test taken in a Class C passenger vehicle |
To remove a restriction for air brakes or a manual transmission, a modified skills test is allowed. For air brakes you must also pass the air brake pre-trip and knowledge test. Removing the tractor-trailer restriction means retaking all three skills tests in a tractor-trailer. 49 CFR 383.135
A disqualified driver must not drive a CMV, and an employer must not allow it. The periods stack on any earlier ones, and many offenses count even if committed in your own car. 49 CFR 383.51
| Offense group | First | Second | Third or later |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major offenses, such as drunk driving, refusing a test, leaving a crash scene or a felony with the vehicle | 1 year (3 years with hazardous materials) | Life | Life |
| Serious traffic violations, such as excessive speeding, reckless driving, following too closely or texting | No disqualification | 60 days within 3 years | 120 days within 3 years |
| Railroad-highway crossing violations | At least 60 days | At least 120 days within 3 years | At least 1 year within 3 years |
| Violating an out-of-service order (not hazardous materials) | 180 days to 1 year | 2 to 5 years within 10 years | 3 to 5 years within 10 years |
FMCSA can also disqualify a driver whose driving it finds to be an imminent hazard, first for up to 30 days and, after a hearing, up to one year. 49 CFR 383.52
695 questions across all eight tests, with gauges, placards, signs and warning sounds. No account needed.
Start a CDL practice test →You must be at least 18 to get a commercial learner's permit. To drive in interstate commerce under the federal motor carrier rules you must be at least 21. A license limited to one state carries restriction K, and intrastate-only drivers follow their own state's qualification rules. 49 CFR 383.7149 CFR 391.11
A CLP can be valid for no more than one year from the date it was first issued. After that you must retake the general and endorsement knowledge tests. A permit issued for a shorter period can be renewed only within that one-year limit. 49 CFR 383.25
You must wait at least 14 days after the permit is first issued before you can take the CDL skills test. Entry-level driver training, if required for your license, must also be finished before that test. 49 CFR 383.2549 CFR 380.609
You need to answer at least 80 percent of the questions correctly on each knowledge test. Failing the air brake part means an air brake restriction, and failing the combination vehicle part means you cannot be issued a Group A permit or license. 49 CFR 383.135
If you will drive in non-excepted interstate commerce, a medical examiner must certify you as physically qualified, and the result is sent to your state. A driver who has not been certified in the previous 24 months must be examined again. 49 CFR 383.7149 CFR 391.45
Yes, if you are getting a first Class A or B CDL, upgrading to A or B, or adding a first P, S or H endorsement. The training must come from a provider on the federal Training Provider Registry. Drivers who already held the license or endorsement before February 7, 2022 are excepted for it. 49 CFR 380.60949 CFR 380.603
The vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control and on-road driving, taken in that order. If you fail one part you cannot continue to the next. Passed parts count only for the initial issue of the permit. 49 CFR 383.13349 CFR 383.113
